Course Description:
Visualizing Japan provides a sweeping survey of historical and modern Japanese society using art works, photography, film, maps, and other visual documents. Students will learn to extract information from images as part of a visual anthropology, and they will also deal with social geographical methods for understanding population density, urban flows, economic disparities, transportation and infrastructure, and built environments in Japan. Throughout the course, students will actively compare what they see in Japan with other, more familiar environments.
Course Narrative:
I took this class during the Spring of 2013. During this time, I was not a Japanese major yet but took it as interest looking into a different outlet other than the previous Business classes i was required to take of my primary major. However, with further wanting to add the Japanese language to my degree as well, this class was the first to set the stage to complete my major.
Thanks to this class, I was able to understand more clearly the Japanese culture through the lecture teachings and assignments emphasizing Visual Culture and Media. With this class, I fulfilled the MLO 2.2 requirement for the Japanese major, which is the Culture Learning Outcome. I was able to critically analyze Japan's cultural background through many forms of media, such as art drawing, videos, and news reports. Due to seeing how their culture is and comparing it to what I grew with, I realized how Japan is able to have their own touch on certain aspects while still connecting in others. I had a final presentation showing a portfolio (PowerPoint) of my true understanding of various Japanese type of arts, and have the script of what I say as well (Script) .
