Business English III (Advanced English for International Trade)
Course Description*:
We learned basic English reading and writing specifically for trading in Business English 1. In this course, I will teach you how to write a higher level of correspondence related to trading. You will be required to write correspondence as practice in class and as homework. The homework will be corrected so that it can be used in a group work. This course is for those who have received credits from Business English 1 or students whose English is deemed to be as decent as English of students with credits of Business English 1. You are allowed to take this course and Business English 1 at the same time.
* Description directly translated from Japanese syllabus
Course Narrative:
I found out on the first day of this class what a mistake I had made, which turned into a great opportunity. I had entered confidently into this classroom with another foreign exchange student as we noticed this class was on the list of classes foreigners could take. Since labeled Business English, I thought this class would be a nice refresher for my Business side what proper English to use for Japan. I found out the class was actually taught in Japanese. I decided to stay and stand up to the challenge presented to me. This class was very difficult, however, I was able to pass with a B.
This class challenged me to take down speedy Japanese notes for the first time. As opposed to Japanese classes that I took targeted for people learning Japanese as a second language, this class was set for native Japanese. The material covered was international trading English, from knowing how to put together a professional letter, requesting certain trade items, or how to finalize trade agreements. I was able to join the Japanese students of translating certain pieces and practice correcting sample papers of how an English letter should be written. I was very surprised to find out when I even made a couple of mistakes! I found thanks to the Japanese friends I made in that class, which required me to practice my Japanese speaking skills more, I was able to ask for help whenever I did't understand something. Since mostly everything was written in this class and turned, I do not have a PDF example of it. However, I do have the book I used, and will provide the title and ISBN number below. I also have an example of the notes I took during class, with an example of translation into English from working with the book.
